printwhat is dandruff?
Malassezia is a fungus, one that’s classified as a yeast. There are currently ten recognised species.
Malassezia globosa is found on many animals, including all humans.
You might wonder, “If we all have it living on us, why don’t we all develop dandruff?“ To understand why, it’s helpful to think about seasonal allergies. Everyone in a given area is exposed to the same seasonal allergens, like tree pollen, when they walk outdoors, However, some people are completely unaffected by seasonal allergies, and some people suffer from very bad allergy symptoms (headaches, sneezing, nasal congestion, etc.). It’s the same with dandruff. We’re all exposed to the Malassezia fungus, but not everyone reacts in the same degree to its presence. If you have dandruff symptoms, you’re not alone. Up to 50% of people have experienced dandruff. People who develop dandruff symptoms can keep them under control by using a dandruff shampoo that targets the source of these symptoms, like head & shoulders.
So if you’re worried about sharing combs scissors or pillows, then you needn’t be. It’s also a common misconception that having dry skin will increase your chances of having dandruff – it won’t.
